Performance Improvement

Stages, Steps and Tools

IntraHealth International/PRIME II relies on the Performance Improvement (PI) approach to build the capacity of providers and organizations working in family planning and reproductive health care. Our interactive website Performance Improvement Stages, Steps and Tools presents an easy-to-use guide for finding the root causes of performance problems and then selecting and implementing interventions to fix those deficits. A set of tools, downloadable from the site, can be used independently or in conjunction with other interventions to improve the quality and accessibility of health care services.

Postpartum and Newborn Care: A Self-Study Manual for Trainers of Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) and Other Community-Level Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Workers

Postpartum and Newborn Care is a self-study manual that updates trainers and technical supervisors of traditional birth attendants and other community-level maternal and child health workers on the major aspects of postpartum and newborn care during the weeks after delivery. The manual also discusses postabortion care and can serve as a reference during the development and organization of training for TBAs and MCH workers.

Reproductive Health Training for Primary Providers: A SourceBook for Curriculum Development

The SourceBook is a unique, modular resource that provides practical solutions for developing a curriculum for training primary providers to offer high-quality, client-centered, integrated reproductive health care services. Each module is based on a specific job and includes detailed information regarding major tasks of that job, the knowledge and skills required to complete the task, and assessment tools to evaluate the knowledge and skills. The modules also include references to other resources and extensive cross-references to related topics in other modules.

The Menstrual Cycle and Its Relation to Contraceptive Methods

The Menstrual Cycle and Its Relation to Contraceptive Methods is a trainers' reference that describes and illustrates the changes that take place during the menstrual cycle and ways in which contraceptive methods interrelate with the cyclic changes. A wall chart illustrates the changes that take place in the anterior pituitary gland, ovaries, uterus, cervix and the basal body temperature during each phase of the menstrual cycle. This publication contains 21 sample client cases demonstrating how knowledge about the changes in the menstrual cycle can be applied in providing client-centered, quality family planning services.

Transfer of Learning: A Guide for Strengthening the Performance of Health Care Workers

When health care workers participating in training are able to transfer their newly acquired knowledge and skills to their jobs, higher levels of performance and sustained improvements in service delivery are likely to result. A joint publication of PRIME II and JHPIEGO, Transfer of Learning uses a dynamic matrix to outline specific steps for supervisors, trainers, learners and co-workers to follow before, during and after a learning intervention to promote the transfer of learning. PRIME II has also created an interactive website based on Transfer of Learning.

Making It Happen: Using Distance Learning to Improve Reproductive Health Provider Performance

A practical how-to guide for developing distance-learning programs in low-resource settings, Making It Happen presents a clear, step-by-step path from conceptualization through evaluation, with detailed examples from program experiences in developing countries.

Training Works! What You Need to Know About Managing, Designing, Delivering and Evaluating Group-based Training (2003)

What makes one training experience better than another? Effective training can help providers of family planning/reproductive health (FP/RH) services to improve their performance. This handbook summarizes the tasks that should be completed at each stage of training to ensure an effective training course. IntraHealth International/PRIME II was part of the development team that developed this handbook, which was produced by JHPIEGO.
